Dear Medical Students,
It is an honour and privilege to serve as your Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigeneity, and Accessibility (EDIIA).
We each came from a different place and arrived by way of a unique journey to Queen’s. These differences contributed to shaping us and inspiring our reactions and perspectives. The better we appreciate and understand each other’s perspective, the better we can work in a team and relate to our patients to deliver quality care.
Diversity is an action, inclusivity is cultural, and belonging is a feeling. My vision is to establish an environment where EDIIA is natural. It should not feel forced or cause resentment. It should be a bridge to unity and fairness, not a bridge to polarization. We all learn, teach, and care for patients together, so we owe it to each other and our patients to stand united. We are stronger together than apart.
I will also continue as your Collaborator Competency Lead. I look forward to weaving EDIIA into collaborative learning, teaching and practice between our MD program, the School of Nursing, and the School of Rehabilitation Therapy.
Please do not be a stranger. I have an open-door policy. I encourage you to drop by my office and say hello. I would appreciate hearing about your lived experience or ideas for change. I am also here if you need support or to speak with someone. My office is a safe space, and our conversations will always be confidential. My office is in The Nest, and I will be there most Mondays from noon until 16:00. I can also be reached at wiley.chung@queensu.ca
I look forward to walking with you on our journey.
Sincerely,
Wiley Chung, MD, MHPE, FRCSC
