Anesthesiology

We provide the highest quality programs to enable our residents to become confident, successful anesthesiologists. In order to achieve this goal, we have developed a comprehensive five year program that is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Given that our focus is to prepare trainees for careers in a variety of settings, we encourage them to be adaptable and practice in a realistic environment. While on call, our residents are available for any type of emergency, be it a call for the cardiac arrest or the trauma team (of which they are members) or to provide anesthetic services for all surgical procedures from obstetrics to cardiac to neonatal surgery.

Cardiology

The Division of Cardiology offers a three year speciality training program leading to Royal College certification in Adult Cardiology. The program is based primarily at Kingston General Hospital, and additional training in Kingston occurs at Hotel Dieu Hospital and the Kingston Heart Clinic.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

The Queen’s University Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) subspecialty training program is approved by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. The two-year comprehensive training program adheres to the RCPSC training requirements and offers a broad spectrum of clinical, scholarly and research and community collaboration experience. The clinical experience includes inpatient and outpatient psychiatry within a multidisciplinary team (MDT) model. There are dedicated outpatient clinics for Mood and Anxiety Disorders, Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Eating Disorders and Urgent Psychiatric Consult Care.

Clinician Investigator Program

Critical Care Medicine

Geriatric Psychiatry

Queen's University is proud to offer one of Canada's leading programs in Internal Medicine. Fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, our core program currently trains 68 residents with approximately 130 faculty (full-time, part-time) in the Department of Medicine. The program is predominantly based at Kingston Health Sciences Center (https://kingstonhsc.ca) which serves the City of Kingston and a large catchment area with approximately 600,000 patients in Southeastern Ontario. KHSC is a tertiary care referral hospital for the region and provides the highest standards of health care.

Nephrology

Nephrology is the subspecialty of Internal Medicine that is primarily concerned with diseases of the kidney. The Nephrology program at Queen’s University is a two-year residency program that prepares its trainees for independent practice as consultant nephrologists. Palliative Medicine

Queen's Palliative Medicine runs up to 3 concurrent residency programs:

A 1-year "enhanced skills" program through family medicine, leading to a Certificate of Added Competency (CAC) from the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
A 2-year subspecialty program, entered through internal medicine, neurology, or anaesthesia, leading to a subspecialty designation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics at Queen's includes departmental academic general pediatricians, community consultant pediatricians, and academic subspecialists. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also known as Physiatry, is the branch of medicine concerned with the comprehensive diagnosis, medical management and rehabilitation of people of all ages with neuromusculoskeletal disorders and associated disabilities. Physiatrists work in a diverse range of subspecialty areas to help patients with a variety of impairments related to conditions such as stroke acquired brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputation, and various musculoskeletal disorders. Physiatrists play a vital role in our health care system and as the Canadian population continues to age, the demand for their services will only continue to grow.

Radiation Oncology

The Radiation Oncology program is a comprehensive five-year residency training program dedicated to the training of exceptional Radiation Oncologists. Rheumatology

The Division of Rheumatology at Queen's University offers a two-year residency program in Adult Rheumatology fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. Residents are prepared for independent practice through training in the specialized assessment and care of patients with Rheumatological, Autoimmune, and Musculoskeletal Health Disorders.

Surgical Foundations

The Surgical Foundations program works in conjunction with individual surgical specialties to deliver fundamental skills and knowledge to surgical residents with the goal of providing a sound grounding in principles common to all surgical disciplines. Classically this has occurred during the first 16 blocks. Recently Surgical Foundations has adopted and implemented a Competency-Based Medical Education model emphasizing ability and proficiency over a time-based teaching model. Surgical Foundations includes residents from General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology and Obstetrics, and Gynecology residency programs.

Urology

The primary objective of the Urology Residency Training Program is to ensure that the trainee is competent in all aspects of the care of patients with Urological Disease. The specific objectives will align with the Royal College Objectives of Training in Urology and Specialty Training Requirements in Urology. They are very detailed and will be of use to assess preparedness for the Royal College exams. They can also be used by the resident to evaluate the quality and comprehensiveness of the training program. Specific objectives are available on a rotation-by-rotation basis. The resident should become familiar with the objectives early in the first year of training and seek learning experiences (textbooks, journal articles, computer-assisted simulations, and demonstrations) and actual or simulated patient cases, appropriate for the attainment of each objective. The rotation-specific objectives of the three years of Urological training will provide more guidance as to self-assessment of progress through the training program.
