Department of National Defense Medical Student Training

Queen's University School of Medicine Announces Additional Medical Student Training Positions for Selected Members of the Department of National Defence (DND).

At the request of the Department of National Defence, Queen's University Undergraduate Medical Education program has completed arrangements with the Department of National Defence (DND) to create up to five additional training positions in the Queen's Medical Doctorate Program. Canadian Forces Staff, who are supported by the DND would be eligible to apply for these positions and offers of admission will be made to those that qualify.

Grade Point Average

Two undergraduate grade point averages (GPAs) will be calculated for each candidate:

cumulative GPA (CGPA) and
most recent two full-time years GPA (2YGPA).

Note: GPAs are calculated using converted grade points based on the OMSAS Conversion Scale

Each year the Queen's School of Medicine Admissions Committee determines minimum requirements for undergraduate GPAs. These minimums vary, sometimes significantly, from year to year. We do not publish our previous or current GPA as they do not predict what minimums will be in future application cycles.

In order to qualify for entry into the School of Medicine, candidates are required to have a minimum of 30 half or 15 full course credits at the undergraduate university level as described below. This requirement must be fulfilled by the June 30 prior to possible entry into the program. Transfer credits appearing on your university transcript will be included in the credit requirement (i.e. IB, AP, exchange credits) but not in the GPA calculation.

Each year we receive applications from candidates who have studied at universities with various credit and grading systems. In order to give each candidate equal consideration, courses are weighted according to their length of study as follows:

Full-year courseweight of 1
Half-year courseweight of .5
Semester courseweight of .5
Three quarter courseweight of .75
Quarter courseweight of 0.25 (applies only to American Universities)

Science laboratory -

Graded separately and is weighted as less than a half-year/semester course:weight of 0.25

Both GPA calculations will use only grades from courses completed by the application deadline
There is no requirement for full time study, however only the cumulative GPA will be calculated for those not enrolled in full time study
Full time study is defined as a minimum of three courses per semester
Full time study must be completed during the academic year, from September to April
Degree programs or individual courses are not considered a factor in the calculation of GPAs
Calculations include grades from all courses included on the transcript, including repeated courses
Courses with Pass/Fail grades or transfer credits (including International Baccalaureate, Advance Placement) are not included in GPA calculations, but are considered credit requirement totals
No adjustments are made based on course load or course levels

NOTE: The following courses of study will not be included in the GPA: naturopathic and chiropractic medicine, consecutive bachelor of education programs, challenge for credit courses, diploma or certificate programs, graduate courses, and undergraduate courses taken as part of a graduate program.

Applicants must submit original transcripts to the UGME office with their application package. If it is anticipated that transcripts may not be delivered to the UGME by the May 10^th deadline, an unofficial transcript will be accepted in the interim.

MCAT

Applicants are required to write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). The Admissions Committee no longer accepts the older version of the MCAT. The applicant can submit multiple test score results frpm multiple tests written. The Admissions committee will select the candidates results from the best test result. Applicants must submit MCAT scores to the Queen’s University Undergraduate Medical Education Office.

Applicants must print and submit their AAMC MCAT Score Report with their application to the UGME.

Autobiographical Sketch

Queen's School of Medicine uses the detailed autobiographical sketch as part of the application evaluation. This submission provides our assessors with a snapshot of a candidate’s personal achievements and experiences. The autobiographical sketch should address the following items:

The autobiographical sketch will be assessed based on the quality of the listed items and the characteristics they represent (not on the number of items listed). The candidate must list the length of time each activity has taken and the location of activity, as well as a brief description, which can be in point form. Please ensure that the items selected for inclusion are relevant to a medical school application.

Reference Letters

The candidate is required to submit three (3) reference letters along with accompanying Confidential Assessment Forms with their application. These letters will be considered as part of the assessment of a candidate's application.

When selecting a referee to submit a letter on your behalf please consider the following points:

the referee will be able to speak highly of your personal qualities, as well as be able to provide examples;
the referee will have time to complete and submit the letter and Confidential Assessment Form prior to the deadline;
the length of time the referee has known you;
graduate students should include their immediate supervisor as one of the referees;
Please submit one letter of reference from your Commanding Officer.
not all references need to be academic; academic qualifications are represented in other parts of the application;
family members should not be used as referees;
the prestige or status of a referee is irrelevant and will not be considered as part of the assessment.

In order to be considered, the applicant’s Confidential Assessment Forms and reference letters must be received by Queens's School of Medicine by application deadline. It is each prospective candidate's responsibility to ensure they have selected three appropriate referees who will submit a Confidential Assessment Form and a reference letter.

Please note, all three (3) Confidential Assessment Forms and reference letters must be submitted and received by the Queen’s University Admissions Office on or before the application deadline. If Queen’s University Undergraduate Medical Education Office does not receive all forms and the letters prior to the deadline, the application will be considered incomplete and will not be assessed further. Please note all letters of reference must be written in English.

Interviews

In order to evaluate non-academic qualities of candidates an interview will be required for those candidates who are successful with their file review.

All Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application by the Admissions Office.

Admissions Offer Checklist/Entry Requirements

Candidates that recieve an offer of admission will receive a complete list of required documents to be completed. Further information will be posted by the Admissions Committee at a later date.

Immunizations

Students are required to be immunized against certain diseases before they enter the clinical setting. These requirements must be fulfilled in order to meet the standards set out in the Public Hospitals Act, Section 4.2, Ontario Regulations 965. The information collected will be used to ensure that these standards are met in order for students to participate in clinical activities. Failure to comply with the Communicable Disease Policy may lead to limited participation in clinical aspects of the MD program and/or successful completion of the program could be compromised.

Police check

In recognition of the requirements of the clinical agencies and the Faculty’s responsibility to ensure that its health sciences students do not place vulnerable populations at additional risk, the School of Medicine requires, as a condition of admission, that students provide a current police record check and a Vulnerable Sector Screening. The police record check includes a check of the applicant’s local state, province and/or country police record and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database. Queen’s reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission based on the results of the police record check.

CPR

Photocopy of your Heart and Stroke Foundation Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certification* or CPR Level C Certification.

As a medical student, you are responsible for ensuring that your CPR Level C/H&S Foundation BLS Provider certification is up to date. The School of Medicine does not provide CPR/BLS certification as part of its curriculum; however, it does offer an ACLS Certification course during MEDS 482: Transition to Residency in April of your final year. *In order to take the ACLS Certification course, you must have a current Heart and Stroke Foundation BLS Provider Certification card; other certifications will not be accepted. The onus is on you to maintain your certification on your own time and at your own expense. You may certify through other providers during preclerkship if you wish; however, you must have the Heart and Stroke Foundation BLS Provider Certification in order to complete the ACLS Certification course offered in your final year of clerkship.

We highly recommend that you recertify annually during the month of May through the Heart and Stroke Foundation to ensure that your certification is current at all times and will permit you to participate in the ACLS Certification course in your final year.
