First Place: Experiential learning at Curve Lake First Nation

QBOL Family Medicine residents out on Curve Lake, territory of the Anishinaabe community, to take partake in experiential learning of Indigenous Health. Indigenous groups have passed down the tradition of gathering, roasting, dancing, and winnowing wild rice for hundreds of years. QBOL residents met with community leaders to learn about these traditions, the impact of colonialism on food insecurity, and how it affects both physical and mental health today. Residents spent the day listening to these stories, processing wild rice, and rehabilitating rice crop.

And YES, this was our first attempt because QBOL is just this good. Preceding this artistic display was a dinner held for all PGY1 Family Medicine Residents at Fort Henry to welcome us into the program. We enjoyed excellent food, drinks, and better company!

In this photo, you can see the PGY1 residents from Queen's Bowmanville Oshawa Lakeridge (QBOL) gathering at the LHEARN Centre within Lakeridge Health Oshawa for our Academic Day. As part of the horizontal curriculum, PGY1 residents engage in regular Academic Days, either weekly or biweekly throughout the year. These gatherings provide opportunities to learn about topics in Family Medicine, reconnect with our fellow residents, and exchange our personal experiences throughout residency.
