A clinician, educator, and academic leader, Dr. Heffernan has contributed to education and research at Queen’s for more than a decade. He’s held key department and program leadership roles across the School of Medicine and is nationally recognized for his expertise in competency-based medical education.

Dr. Heffernan earned his MD at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he later completed a Master of Science in Medicine (clinical epidemiology). In addition to his core internal medicine residency training, he has completed two fellowships, in respiratory medicine and critical care medicine, both at Queen’s.

Since joining QHS as a faculty member in 2013, Dr. Heffernan has served as program director of both the respiratory medicine and critical care medicine training programs. Some of his most significant leadership contributions include advancing the university’s fellowship oversight and quality improvement, and championing national competency-based medical education frameworks through the Royal College. He is a dedicated advocate of resident and fellow wellness.

Dr. Heffernan currently serves as a governor of the Southeastern Academic Medical Organization and is a member of its board of directors.
