The Queen’s University Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) is an accredited postgraduate medical education program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The overall goal of the CIP at Queen’s is to develop the next generation of Clinician Scientist research leaders who will have developed the skill sets to achieve broad-based excellence not only in research but also as clinicians, supervisors/mentors, teachers and academics in general.

Residents enrolled in any of the specialty/subspecialty training programs at Queen’s University that are accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada are eligible to enrol in the CIP. All CIP trainees commence their research training while registered as a postgraduate (PGY) trainee. The CIP involves a minimum of two years of structured, rigorous research training in addition to the existing speciality requirements providing the resident with the opportunity to integrate research and clinical training.

The CIP at Queen’s is currently offered as a Graduate Stream leading to obtaining either a Masters or PhD. The Continuous Training (CT) Pathway is a minimum of 24 months of continuous, intensive, research training, which can be done at different points in the residency. The Fractionated Training (FT) Pathway allows for a distribution of a minimum 24 months of research training in periods of three months or longer blocks, with one year of continuous research training. Furthermore, while the current CIP is for a Graduate Stream, we now also offer a Post-graduate Stream for those residents who have already completed a Masters or PhD graduate program and are interested in furthering their research development.
