Symptoms of Sensory Dysfunction


Spontaneous Sensations
  • Paraesthesias are non painful tinglings such as when your foot goes to sleep
  • Dysesthesias are unpleasant feelings often described as burning pain
Distorted Sensations (induced by touching)
  • Hyperesthesia occurs when non-painful stimuli are magnified (elevated threshold)
  • Allodynia occurs when all stimuli are felt as painful (patients go to great lengths to avoid things touching them)
  • Hyperpathia occurs when you have exaggerated spontaneous and induced sensation of pain. The pain is described as constant and unremitting
