There are 3 options for this assignment. With your team, choose ONE of the following assignment options:

1. Below is a photograph of the classroom that Nicholas will attend. On the right hand side, where the photograph ends, there is an area that children sit on the floor for circle time. Nicholas' teacher and mother have asked you to make recommendations to facilitate his inclusion with his peers in the classroom. Make a list of recommendations that you will present to Nicholas' teacher and mother for implementation in the classroom. Take into account aspects of the classroom environment such as seating, the social atmosphere, and Nicholas' ability to access his curriculum. Include assistive technology in your recommendations. Be simple and concise. Use the eeb resources provided throughout this module (and others that you are able to access via the internet) that provide an overview of available equipment to inform your recommendations. The final assignment should not exceed 2 single spaced pages, including photographs, if you find that they'd be useful to present any suggested equipment to Nicholas' mother and teacher.

2. Use the resources provided throughout this module, as well as perform any necessary independent research to find alternative forms of augmentative communication devices that might be more accessible to Nicholas. Choose a specific system, and include any switches or positioning devices that you think would be appropriate to facilitate Nicholas' ability to use his communication system. Write a set of recommendations that you would present to the SLP on the early intervention speech team, including a rationale for why you think another type of communication system is required by Nicholas. Remember that your role as the occupational therapist is to increase Nicholas' ability to eventually use his AAC system independently and with ease. Also remember your training in fine and gross motor functioning. Ensure that you have a good understanding of the OT role vs. the SLP role on such a team. This assignment should not exceed two single spaced pages, including any necessary photographs.

3. Research available software packages that would be useful for Nicholas in the classroom to increase his ability to access the curriculum. Develop recommendations for a computer system, including at least 3 software packages, and an appropriate desk on which to situate the computer system. Provide a budget for this equipment, and discuss your rationale for recommending such software and and a computer for Nicholas to help him to access his curriculum. Ensure that you review the educational expectations at the kindergarten level to inform your recommendations. It is important to note, however, that a computer system will not be funded again for another 3 years, so what you recommend now should meet Nicholas' needs until grade 3. Your equipment budget should not exceed $5000. The final report should be no longer than 2 single spaced pages (1 page rationale, 1 page budget).
