Standardized Participants (SP) are a diverse group of trained individuals representing the Kingston community from all walks of life. Our current pool has over 100 SPs, aged 16-85. Students interact with SPs in a variety of learning and testing activities. Training Specialists prepare SPs to portray cases for the learners to implement practical and communication skills. SPs allow students & professionals the opportunity to practice these skills in a safe, structured, supervised setting before they encounter real situations.

Standardized Participants are the bread and butter of our organization. If you would like to become an SP, please read through the information below. If you have any questions that are not answered below, please contact us at: queenssp@queensu.ca

  • Anyone can become an SP - the minimum age is 16
  • An acting/drama or medical background is an asset, however is not a requirement
  • We encourage a diverse demographic of applicants
  • If you would like to join our team, please complete and submit the Standardized Participant Application
  • Interviews are scheduled throughout the year based upon session requirements
    • After interviews, all SPs are required to complete a Criminal Record Disclosure (CPIC). If you don't have a current CPIC you will be asked to visit the Kingston Police website or visit their office to complete one in person.

An SP can be involved in a variety of different scenarios, such as the following:

  • Medical Related Scenarios:
  • General history/interview taking
  • General physical examinations
  • Combined general history and general physical examinations
  • Complex history/interview taking
  • Lecture hall physical examination demos
  • Complex and/or invasive physical examinations
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Non-Medical Related Scenarios
  • Educational or Promotional Videos
  • Mock Trials 
  • Emergency Services Training
  • Leadership training
  • Presentation techniques
  • Diversity Training
  • Anti-bullying tactics
  • And much more.

  • SPs are casual employees of Queen's University and are paid on a bi-weekly basis
  • SPs are paid an hourly rate which varies according to the type of scenario they are participating in
  • As a casual employee you are not guaranteed a minimum or maximum number of hours per week and work varies based upon session requirements

  • To ensure performance consistency we provide training specific to each scenario
  • Training is provided by a member of our training team
  • During training the objectives of the session are identified and the character/scenario is developed through a scenario overview, round robin Q&A, role play
  • An important part of your role as an SP is giving feedback so students/professionals can gain insight into their strengths as well as areas of improvement
  • SP feedback focuses on how the students'/professionals' communication and hands-on techniques made them feel from the perspective of the character they are portraying
