Distal humerus fractures - medial epicondylar fracture

  • Represents 10% of pediatric elbow injuries.
  • An avulsion type injury that occurs when a valgus load is applied to the extended elbow. The sail sign is usually present with medial swelling and edema of the soft tissues.
  • A serious injury ranging from a simple undisplaced fracture to displacement of the fragment with entrapment in the joint space.
  • Frequently accompanies elbow dislocation and this injury should be looked for specifically after reduction.
