Each year 100 new students are selected from a pool of applicants to join our Undergraduate Medical Education Program. In order for us to select these students, an assessment of each candidate’s suitability for our program and a career in medicine is made based on the following factors.
Two undergraduate grade point averages (GPAs) will be calculated for each candidate:
- cumulative GPA (CGPA) and
- most recent two full-time years GPA (2YGPA)
Note: GPAs are calculated using converted grade points based on the OMSAS Conversion Scale
Each year the Queen's School of Medicine Admissions Committee determines minimum requirements for undergraduate GPAs. These minimums vary, sometimes significantly, from year to year. We do not publish our previous or current GPA as they do not predict what minimums will be in future application cycles.
In order to qualify for entry into the School of Medicine, candidates are required to have a minimum of 30 half or 15 full course credits at the undergraduate university level as described below. This requirement must be fulfilled by the June 30 prior to possible entry into the program. Transfer credits appearing on your university transcript will be included in the credit requirement (i.e. IB, AP, exchange credits).
Each year we receive applications from candidates who have studied at universities with various credit and grading systems. In order to give each candidate equal consideration, courses are weighted according to their length of study as follows:
- Full-year courseweight of 1
- Half-year courseweight of .5
- Semester courseweight of .5
- Three quarter courseweight of .75
- Quarter courseweight of 0.25 (applies only to American Universities)
Science laboratory -
- Graded separately and is weighted as less than a half-year/semester course:weight of 0.25
- Both GPA calculations will use only grades from courses completed by the application deadline
- There is no requirement for full time study, however only the cumulative GPA will be calculated for those not enrolled in full time study
- Full time study is defined as a minimum of three courses per semester
- Full time study must be completed during the academic year, from September to April
- Summer courses are solely evaluated towards the cGPA
- For repeated courses, the credit is only counted once but all grades obtained are calculated towards the GPA
- Degree programs or individual courses are not considered a factor in the calculation of GPAs
- Calculations include grades from all courses included on the transcript, including repeated courses
- Courses with Pass/Fail grades or transfer credits (including International Baccalaureate, Advance Placement and CEGEP programs) are not included in GPA calculations, but are considered credit requirement totals
- No adjustments are made based on course load or course levels
Note: The following courses of study will not be included in the GPA: naturopathic and chiropractic medicine, consecutive bachelor of education programs, challenge for credit courses, diploma or certificate programs, graduate courses, and undergraduate courses taken as part of a graduate program.
Applicants who have studied outside of North America two or more semesters must have their foreign transcripts evaluated through The World Education Services (WES). Information pertaining to the assessment of international grades can be found on the OMSAS website.
Credentialing assessment means converting international academic credentials into their Canadian educational equivalents. If a World Education Services (WES) assessment includes a copy of your official transcript, you are not required to request a transcript from your registrar.
The standard CGPA and 2YGPA will not be calculated for candidates submitting only foreign transcripts. Applications for these candidates will be reviewed on an individual basis by the admissions committee.
Note: The admissions committee does not publish previous or current GPA cut-offs as they vary year-to-year based upon the current applicant pool data.
All applicants are required to write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) prior to the deadline date for submission of the application to OMSAS.

- The Queen’s School of Medicine imposes NO restrictions on the number of times that the candidate may take the test.
- In the event an applicant has written the test multiple times, the applicant must ensure that all test results are released to OMSAS. All MCAT scores will then be reported by OMSAS to Queen’s University.
- Test results are valid from any test written within 5 years of the application submission, but this only applies to the 2015 MCAT as the committee no longer assess the older version of the MCAT test scores .
- Applicants whose MCAT score have not been submitted prior to the assessment of their file may be disqualified.
- Applications will be assessed based on the scores from the candidate's best test results.
Note: The admissions committee does not publish previous or current MCAT cut-offs as they vary year-to-year based upon the current applicant pool data. The admissions committee reviews all four subjects as well as the applicants total score.

- The autobiographical sketch is completed through the OMSAS application and then disseminated to the Admissions Committee for review.
- Please ensure that items selected to include are those most relevant to a medical school application.
- There is room in the form to provide information relating to 32 items.
- Submissions are assessed based on the quality of the listed items and the characteristics they represent (not the number of items listed).
- The candidate must list the length of time each activity has taken, location of activity, and a brief description which can be in point form.
Referees/Confidential Assessment Forms:
You are required to ask 3 different individuals to provide a reference on your behalf. At least 1 of your 3 referees should be academic- or employment-related and 1 should be personal (non-academic). The third reference can be of your choosing.
Select referees who have extensive personal knowledge of you and, as a result, are in a position to answer the Confidential Assessment Form (CAF) questions.
New for 2020: In order for referees to provide uniform information that admission committees are specifically looking for from the reference process, each of your referees will be asked to fill out a CAF. It is your responsibility to inform your referees that they must fill out the CAF, and that additional letters of reference will no longer be accepted.
On the CAF, your references will be asked to respond to the following:
Would this applicant make a good physician?
Rate the applicant on each of the following attributes:
Professionalism (e.g., commitment to ethical practice, standards of behaviour and accountability to others)
Empathy (e.g., demonstrating consideration of others’ perspectives)
Identify and comment on 1 area of improvement for the applicant.
Share any other information you feel may be relevant to a medical school’s admission committee.
Information about Dates of Submission
All Confidential Assessment Form are expected to be received by OMSAS by the October deadline. It is each candidate's responsibility to ensure they have selected three appropriate referees to submit a Confidential Assessment Form. In the event less than 3 letters are submitted by November 1st, the application will be considered incomplete and will not be assessed further.
Note: The Admission Committee is unable to review and evaluate Confidential Assessment Forms that are not written in english.

- Before registering, please ensure that you have checked all personal belongings (i.e. coats, backpacks, purses) in the coat room. No personal belongings including cellphones, watches, purses, wallets, documents etc. are allowed into the MMI exam site.
- When you register with your identification, you will be given a name tag which must be placed so that it can be clearly seen by the interview staff. This name tag will indicate which room number you will start at.
- Upon completing your registration, you will be directed to the waiting area. Once you have registered, you will be required to stay at the exam site until you are finished. When you have finished the last MMI station, you will be directed to the Personal Interview location.
- In the waiting area you will be given a booklet of blank paper and a pencil. You may use this to help you through the MMI circuit. You must return the booklet and pencil when you leave the MMI site. Failure to return these items may result in disqualification for admission.
- No breaks have been scheduled during the MMI circuit. Before you begin, please ensure that you will not need to leave the circuit, except for an emergency situation.
- During the course of the MMI, you will move from one station to another. Each station is numbered sequentially. After completing a station, you will move to the next sequential station.
- Stations are numbered 1 to 18. You will complete 6 stations. There are 3 tracks of the same 6 stations running in each interview cycle.
- Please do not talk in the hall between stations. There are hall monitors to assist you should you have a problem while outside the MMI rooms.
- There are two types of stations:
- Role Play with Actor and an Evaluator
- Interviewer and Evaluator
- You will have two minutes between stations to read a scenario posted on the outside of the door and to formulate your response. If you like, you may write notes in the booklet provided. The scenario will also be posted inside the room.
- A message will sound when you are to enter the station.
- Each station will be 7 minutes in length. You will have 5 minutes to respond to the stem and with 2 minutes remaining you will be asked a follow-up question.
- A message will sound at the end of the seven minutes indicating the end of the encounter and that you are to move to the door for the next station.
- If you finish the station prior to the end signal, please remain inside the station.
- The Personal interview will last approximately twenty minutes. During this interview you will be asked a series of questions and if time allows, provided an opportunity to ask your own questions.
Note: All candidates attending interviews will be required to sign a Confidentiality Non-Disclosure statement, to ensure the integrity and security of the MMI process. Any violation of the signed statement will result in removal of the admissions process.
Candidates offered interviews should be aware that the MMI is only scheduled once per year, over the course of two weekends. Rescheduling, regardless of the reason, will not be accommodated.
