Queen's University Department of Surgery - Research
The William Ersil Resident Research DayThe William Ersil Resident Research Day is an annual event designed specifically to enable Residents from the Department of Surgery to present ongoing clinical and basic science research performed during the year under the supervision of Attending Staff.
Dr. William Ersil obtained his medical degree from Queen's in 1979. He entered the Orthopedic Surgery program at Queen's; sadly he developed malignant disease and died during his second year of residency training. He had an inquisitive mind, and he believed in the value of research.
This day has become the most important single day event in the Department of Surgery, when all Surgical Residents and Attending Staff gather for the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the surgical research activities within the Department. It also provides a forum for surgeons from both with and outside the Queen's community to renew or establish professional and personal liaisons.
Held in conjunction with the Office of Continuing Medical Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Queen's University, this educational event is approved as an accredited group learning activity as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (maximum of 6 CPD credits).
Our most recent Resident Research Day took place on Nov 21st, 2011 and we are pleased to announce the winners of the following awards
Graham Fedorak - The William Ersil Award for best Orthopedic Surgery paper
Allison Archibald - Best General Surgery Paper
Stephen Mann - Best Basic Science Paper
Charles Sorbie Department of Surgery Faculty Research Day
Our Department of Surgery is pleased to announce that our first ever Faculty Research Day was a great success! This CME event took place recently on April 8th, 2011. Its main objective was to provide participants with an opportunity to enhance surgical research by familiarizing themselves with the research activities of others within the Department of Surgery at Queen’s University as well as provide research mentorship for our surgical residents.
Guest speakers were invited to review the role of research in surgical education and its influence on industry.
