Indications

Emergency

Pneumothorax

  • In all mechanically ventilated patients
  • Large, or symptomatic pneumothorax
  • Clinically unstable patient (hypotension, increasing O2 requirements)
  • Tension pneumothorax (after needle decompression)
  • Pneumothorax secondary to chest trauma

Hemopneumothorax (e.g. post-trauma)

Esophageal rupture with gastric leak into pleural space

Non-Emergency

Malignant pleural effusion

Treatment with sclerosing agents or pleurodesis

Recurrent pleural effusions

Complex parapneumonic effusion or empyema

Chylothorax
