Tube Thoracostomy

Introduction

A tube thoracostomy, or chest tube, is used to evacuate an abnormal accumulation in the pleural space. The procedure may be performed under emergent or non-emergent conditions. Conditions that may require treatment with a tube thoracostomy include pneumothorax, pleural effusions, empyema or chylothorax. Trauma is a common indication due to accumulations of blood or air in the pleural space.
