Welcome to the Queen's Joanna Briggs Collaboration (QJBC) for Patient Safety This initiative, led by the Queen's University School of Nursing, has been funded for 5 years by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Knowledge Synthesis and Exchange (CIHR KSE) in the amount of $1,000,000. Principal Investigator: Dr. Margaret B. Harrison Partners: Accreditation Canada, Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) and the international Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Issue: Patient safety is a pressing priority in the Canadian health care system. In particular, hospital adverse events are frequently highlighted in news reports. However, patient safety outside of hospitals, in settings such as home care, has been neglected and is poorly understood. This is troubling given that care previously delivered in hospitals is increasingly being transferred to ambulatory, home and residential care. Mission Statement: To improve the quality and reliability of practice, and ultimately health outcomes by enabling the use of best available evidence on patient safety. QJBC will achieve this:
Method: QJBC uses the JBI approach to evidence known as FAME (feasibility, appropriateness/acceptability, meaningfulness and effectiveness). This encompassing approach is critical to the actual uptake of practice evidence as it builds on effectiveness research to include evidence relevant to the context. QJBC 5-Year Plan: 1) Build infrastructure, 2) Facilitate evidence production (syntheses and adaptation) on patient safety, and 3) Establish networks on patient safety QJBC is building, strategically and incrementally, a sustainable, vibrant 'community of practice' focused on evidence generation and evidence use for patient safety. With our key partners, Accreditation Canada, Canadian Patient Safety Institute and Canadian Institutes of Health Research, we have formed a collaboration to disseminate evidence to community health care settings. Our partners are instrumental in working with us to promote the development of a dynamic and meaningful collaboration with those engaged in the field of patient safety across Canada.
