Training Hospitals

While Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital are the primary learning sites for the first and third years, the majority of time is spent at St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital, a non acute care facility within walking distance of the Queen’s campus.

St. Mary's of the Lake Hospital is one of thee main sites for Providence Care, Southeastern Ontario’s leading provider of specialized mental health care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, specialized geriatric services, complex continuing care, palliative care, and long-term care.  Care is provided through inpatient, outpatient and community services.  Providence Care is a multi-site organization with its three main sites located in Kingston - St Mary’s of the Lake Hospital, Mental Health Services, and Providence Manor - as well as numerous community locations throughout Southeastern Ontario.

As one of Kingston’s university hospitals, Providence Care is committed to creating, sharing and applying knowledge, and training the next generation of health care professionals.   Queen’s residency programs based at Providence Care include Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Palliative Care, and Family Medicine – Care of the Elderly.

In 2011, the provincial government announced plans to build a new hospital in Kingston designed to replace the existing Providence Care facilities.  The new 270 inpatient bed Providence Care Hospital will become the home for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, in addition to all mental health services, complex continuing care, palliative care, and specialized geriatrics.  The hospital’s care environment will benefit from its lakeside location by fully engaging the surrounding landscape and natural light will flow throughout the facility.   Patients will benefit from the integration of clinical care, education and research in the new facility and multipurpose learning spaces will be created strengthening existing relationships with Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College.
