Research: Inflammation in the Esophageal Mucosa
We have a combined clinical and laboratory research program for the study of gastrointestinal food allergic disorders. Currently, we are working in the area of esophageal inflammation, both acid-induced and allergy-related (eosinophilic) esophagitis.
In our laboratory, we utilize human biopsy tissue and esophageal epithelial cell lines. We are exploring signal transduction pathways and immunologic mechanisms as they apply to the pathogenesis of inflammation and pro-inflammatory cytokine production.
In the clinic, we are concerned with improving the criteria by which esophagitis is diagnosed and differentiated from other disorders, and the strategies by which it is treated.
A more detailed description of our research can be found in the Overview section.
