On behalf of the Postgraduate Medical Education Office at Queen’s University, I am once again pleased to present our annual report. You will find details of the many goals and accomplishments in postgraduate medical education at Queen's over the past academic year.
It is an understatement to say that we have had a busy year. Our postgraduate residency programs have begun the process of transforming their curricula to align with a competency-based approach. This multi-year initiative will fundamentally change the way postgraduate medical education is delivered at Queen’s and we are proud to be national leaders in this endeavour. A new assessment system has been designed and is now in the pilot stage before being rolled out to all of our programs. Planning has begun for our next accreditation review in 2017, and we are developing new programs and initiatives which will enhance our international reputation.
While all of these accomplishments, along with so many others, are worthy of praise, there is one that I would like to highlight again this year as being particularly noteworthy. I am referring to our continued success in the annual residency match and this year produced our best results yet. Of the 133 available PGY1 positions, all but three filled after the first iteration match and the remainder filled without difficulty in the second iteration. The numbers are quite remarkable: almost 6,000 applications were ultimately received for residency positions at Queen's meaning that there were 45 applicants for every one position available. The quality of our postgraduate programs is clearly recognized by prospective residents across the country and around the world, and I extend a very warm welcome to those new members of the Queen's community who will join us in 2015.
I hope that you will take some time to review this report and learn more about the postgraduate environment at Queen's. We are so very fortunate to have a community of outstanding faculty, staff, and residents who never cease to amaze me with what they accomplish each year. I would also invite you to contact me directly should you have any questions or comments about our activities. I can be reached at email@example.com.
