The target cell
has a centre containing hemoglobin, surrounded by a pale area, then more
hemoglobin at the periphery, so that it resembles a target on the blood
film. Hemoglobinopathy and liver disease are the commonest causes. If Howell-Jolly
Bodies are also present, then hyposplenism, or splenectomy, may be suspected.
