ANEMIA QUIZ

From this page you can link to several clinical problems in anemia. In each you are given a short history, and a blood count. Also to be found are a list of symptoms you can check for and a list of investigations you can order -- simply click on the appropriate text to find the results. Please be selective in your approach. Try to determine the type of anemia first, then the likely cause, and finally the clinical diagnosis. Thus:

1. Decide what type of anemia is present from the MCV

2. Identify the cause for the anemia from the blood count and any additional laboratory investigations you choose

3. Go to the clinical list and find the answers only to those clinical questions which are relevant to the case

4. Try and decide if and how you might pursue the problem further, and look up the answers to any of the available tests from the list provided.

5. Record your answers.

*Note that a hematology consult can be obtained, but if you find that the hematologist is out of town, the consultation was irrelevant and should not have been sought. The same is true for the other investigations: if you ask a stupid question, you will receive a stupid answer!*
