(H&E 90) The jejunum is lined with simple columnar epithelial cells. A brush border is also evident at the apical surface of the epithelial cells. Using electron microscopy this part of the cell is occupied by microvilli. This modification of the apical surface of columnar epithelial cells can dramatically increases the surface area of these cells for absorption. |
