(H&E 40) In the kidney, lining the parietal surface of renal space are simple squamous epithelial cells (arrows). Simple squamous epithelial cells are flat cells and they allow easy exchange of gases, nutrients, metabolic wastes and other products between tissues and the vascular compartment. This type of epithelium also presents in the lining of the heart chambers (endocardium) and blood vessels (endothelium) and of the air side of the lung.
