Visiting Medical Electives

In accordance with regulations published by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Queen's University provides elective experiences in its affiliated hospitals for students in the clerkship phase from other accredited medical schools (LCME/CACMS) in Canada and the USA. Activities during the elective are in keeping with the student's demonstrated competence.

Due to limited resources, we can offer electives only to students from North American Medical Schools accredited by LCME/CACMS. A Directory of Accredited Medical Education Programs can be found here.

 Acceptance of a student will depend on an available position in the rotation roster and on the recommendation of the applicants Dean.  

Before applying for an elective experience at Queen's University, please ensure that: You are/or will be in the final clerkship phase of your program. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is up to date. Elective period requested is not longer than 12 weeks. Application must be forwarded to this office at least four months prior to the beginning of the requested elective. The earliest date applications will be accepted is 6 months in advance of the requested elective date. Elective experience is entirely financed by the visiting student. (A stipend will not be provided nor can this office arrange accommodation). You have arranged for adequate health coverage for the duration of the elective.

Your clerkship elective application must include:

• Objective outline and delineation of clinical experience to date.

• Clerkship Electives Application for Visiting Students form completed in full, including Part B, to be completed by your Dean's office.

• Communicable Disease Screening Form - Visiting Medical Elective Students, completed in full as we will not accept individual copies of your immunization records.

• A passport sized photo of yourself.

• Proof of N95 Mask Fit Testing.

• A Recent Criminal Record Check

• THERE IS A NONREFUNDABLE ADMINISTRATIVE FEE OF $100.00 PER ELECTIVE. A CERTIFIED CHEQUE OR MONEY ORDER (CANADIAN FUNDS) MADE PAYABLE TO QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY MUST ACCOMPANY THE APPLICATION.
