Diversity and Equity Statement

In keeping with the shared value of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the School of Medicine to be “enriched by diversity”, and informed by the principles of diversity and equity as defined in the policies of Queen’s University, we strive to provide a welcoming and accommodating environment to everyone, including racialized persons, Aboriginal persons, LBGTQ+ persons and persons with disabilities.

Consistent with this commitment, we have identified two groups for priority attention as we endeavor to recruit, select and support students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in Canada’s healthcare workforce: the Aboriginal people of Canada (First Nations, Inuit, Métis) and those facing economic barriers to the study of Medicine.

 We also strive to

  • recruit and retain faculty and staff who reflect the diversity of Canadian society
  • maintain an environment where all can work and learn free of discrimination and harassment
  • ensure that our curriculum prepares graduates to
  • develop awareness of personal biases in their approach to health care delivery
  • understand the needs of and provide quality care for diverse populations
  • realize the impact that social and cultural circumstances may have on patients’ health
  • appreciate demographic influences on health care quality and effectiveness
