Teaching and Learning Committee

Terms of Reference

The UGME Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC) acts as a sub-committee of the Curriculum Committee to oversee, for years 1-4 in the UGME program:

  1. Development and monitoring of standards for instructional methods:
  2. Development and monitoring of process to review curricular content
  3. Development, implementation and review of processes for communication about teaching and learning.
  4. Development and review of processes for educational support for all teaching faculty in UGME
  5. Development and monitoring of processes for educational scholarship in UGME

Responsibilities:

1.     Instructional methods

  • Establish, promote and review policy regarding instructional methods that are aligned to the mission and values of the UG medical program
  • Define characteristics of instructional methods and make recommendations for their implementation to support the alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment
  • Track and verify the use of instructional methods used in all courses
  • Promote and support innovations in instruction or curriculum that promote relevant, active and integrated learning

2.     Curricular content overview:

  • Develop, promote and monitor a process to review curricular content.

3. Communication about teaching and learning:

  • Develop, promote and review a communication strategy for knowledge mobilization of issues and information about teaching and learning

4.     Educational development:

  • Promote and make recommendations for faculty development that meets the needs of faculty in UGME, in liaison with Faculty of Health Sciences resources

5.     Scholarship of teaching and learning: 

  • Identify, promote and support opportunities for educational scholarship for faculty and staff in UGME in liaison with Faculty of Health Sciences resources, and Queen’s and external resources

Membership: 

  • Chair
  • 3 Course Directors, 1 each from Year 1, Year 2, Clerkship
  • Director, Clinical Skills
  • Faculty representative from CFRC, SAC, Professional Foundations Committees
  • 3 students:  1 each from Year 1, Year 2 and Clerkship
  • Educational Specialist
  • Educational Developer
  • Assessment and Evaluation Consultant
  • Representative of MEdTech
  • Director Office of Faculty Development (ex officio)
  • Director Office of Health Sciences Education (ex officio)
  • Associate Dean, UGME (ex officio)
  • 2 Instructors (1 from pre-clerkship & 1 from clerkship)

Support

  • Special Curricular Assistant
  • Administrative Assistant

Meetings

Will be held at least monthly and at the call of the chair.

Reporting

The TLC reports to the Curriculum Committee on the 5 responsibilities of the committee, annually, or as required

The TLC liaises with SAC, CFRC, Professional Foundations (PF) Committees regularly, and other committees as necessary.  The SAC, CFRC, PF representatives are responsible to report on relevant TLC issues to their respective committees. The chair, or a designate, will liaise with other committees or UGME stakeholders  as necessary.

Policies and Procedural Guidelines:

Policies and procedural guidelines for each of the five responsibilities will be developed and circulated to UGME Curriculum Committee, MDPEC, etc.

Voting

All members have voting privileges.

Decision Making

Decisions are reached by consensus; where consensus is not achieved, a majority vote is taken.

Minutes

Minutes are kept for each meeting. Minutes are circulated to the members of the committee and the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education.  Minutes are available on the TLC Community.
