Clinical Services
The division provides a wide spectrum of cardiac consultative services and diagnostic testing for patients in Southeastern Ontario. Consultations are provided on physician referral only.
Acute coronary care and cardiology ward services are located at the Kingston General Hospital and general cardiology outpatient clinics are held at the Hotel Dieu Hospital. Specialty clinics are Arrhythmia/Syncope Clinic (HDH), Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic (HDH), Congestive Heart Failure (HDH) and the Cardiac Rhythm Device Clinic (KGH).
Diagnostic services include: electrocardiography, ECG treadmill testing, ambulatory ECG recording, transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, treadmill stress echocardiography, tilt table testing, pacemaker function, invasive electrophysiologic studies, cardiac catheterization and angiography.
The Divisions of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery work in a closely integrated fashion to serve patients requiring cardiac surgery. The invasive cardiology program includes diagnostic angiography coronary angioplasty and stenting procedures. In the latter part of 1999 we added catheter ablation procedures for arrhythmias and implantable cardiac defibrillators as new treatment services.
Educational Programs
The division contributes to the undergraduate programs of the Health Sciences Faculty of Queen's University. Postgraduate clinical education is provided for Internal Medicine trainees and there is a three year specialty training program leading to Royal College certification in cardiology. Continuing medical education programs are planned several times a year for the community physicians in our region.
Research
Division members are involved in clinical research in multiple areas. Some of the current projects involve: 1) Dobutamine stress echocardiography, 2) enzyme studies in acute myocardial infarction, 3) multimedia presentation as an educational tool in cardiology, 4) clinical use of nitrates in coronary disease and development of tolerance, 5) computer interpretation of ECGs, 6) studies in atrial fibrillation, 7) coronary artery disease in women, 8) educational methods for teaching ECG interpretation, 9) biventricular pacing, 10) new ICD technologies, 11) investigation and management of syncope. We are also involved in multicentre clinical trials.
