Who should take this course?

New infection control practitioners in all health care settings, including communicable disease staff working in health units. Priority is given to registrants who are currently working in infection prevention and control. Consideration is given to those possessing an RN, BSc or MLT.


Course overview

The broad goals of the course are:

  1. to equip practitioners with the fundamental skills required to enter into Infection Prevention and Control practice and to grow as adult learners into seasoned experts in the field.
  2. to provide a broad understanding of the core subject areas of infection prevention and control required for competence as a novice practitioner.
  3. to demonstrate to students techniques for life-long learning, both for themselves and for those whom they will teach and coach, that foster continuous professional growth.
  4. to give students a sound scientific foundation in epidemiology, microbiology and continuous improvement theory that will allow them to successfully apply these principles to the day-to-day practice of infection prevention and control.
  5. to review and detail the essential practice areas of infection prevention and control with an emphasis on practical application for daily practice in a wide variety of health care settings, ranging from acute hospital, non-acute hospital, long term care, home care and ambulatory care settings.
  6. to instill critical thinking and evaluation attitudes and to provide the skills to evaluate and knowledgeably apply new knowledge in Infection Prevention and Control to a wide variety of health care settings.
