This module has been developed to introduce a common understanding and language for collaborative practice to support the development of improved collaboration within health care teams.

The definition of “health care providers” is not confined to professionals or regulated providers, but includes all those involved in care delivery.

By the completion of the module, participants will be able to:

  1. Define collaborative practice;
  2. Describe the purpose for collaborative practice;
  3. Describe the Structured Collaborative Practice© model as one model of collaborative practice;
  4. Describe the spectrum of collaboration;
  5. Describe the 7 elements essential for collaboration; and
  6. Identify practice setting variables that support or constrain collaboration.

Module Instructions:

  1. Please read through the following information and take the opportunity to reflect on the concepts of collaboration within the context of your team and work environment.
  2. The module will take no more than one hour to complete.  You may review the information in pieces if you wish and revisit the module as you have the time.
  3. Reflective questions are included throughout the module.  They are meant to provide a stimulus for further thoughts about collaboration.  You may wish to record your responses for future reference and/or for discussion with your colleagues.
  4. If you have questions or concerns direct them to office.ipep@queensu.ca.
  5. HAVE FUN!
Building Planes in the Air: In today's health care environment, you may feel that there is no time to pause and reflect. Many practitioners have described the feeling that they are "flying by the seat of their pants" as they attempt to provide quality patient care, engage in their own professional development and contribute to a healthy work environment. In working through this initial learning module, the SEIPCLE team hopes you will be able to "land long enough" to take a few moments to learn some new concepts in collaborative practice. We recognize that your time is limited and that you must continue to be responsible for your clinical work. Perhaps you will identify with the people in this video as they engage in their team's work under challenging conditions.
