PT 861 - Assessment of infant gross motor development: Down syndrome
Components of an assessment of gross motor function in infants
- The goal of the motor assessment in infancy is to obtain a broad view of an infant's abilities. This goal is best achieved by using a combinations of approaches to gather relevant information:
- parental / caregiver perspective on infant development; this information is gathered by interview and questionnaire
- naturalistic observation of an infant's spontaneous movement repertoire in an unstructured environment; this type of observation provides an authentic insight into an infant's ability to interact with his or her environment
- formal assessment, using either norm- or criterion-referenced assessment tools.
