Development: An experience-driven process

  • Development refers to the change in observed behaviours of a child over time. These changes are not prescriptive in nature; that is, they do not simply emerge as a function of brain maturation. Rather, changes in behaviour emerge from the interaction between the child's developing central and peripheral systems and the child's environment. Global child development is, therefore, a process that is driven by experience.
