The Initiative Campaign

It was a fabulous few days! This weekend Queen’s launched our 500 million dollar Initiative Campaign. The kickoff occurred Saturday evening with a wonderful ceremony at Grant Hall followed by a innovative and warm reception at Ban Righ.

Gordon Nixon, Com’79, LLD’03, as Campaign Chair, announced that we have now reached $300M of that $500M dollar goal.

The weekend was filled with many celebrations. There was the opening of a beautiful new rugby field on campus, the Nixon Field. The Medical school student bursary golf tournament attracted a record number of golfers, and a record number of dollars, in support of our students. The Stauffer library donor wall was unveiled, recognition of major contributions we have received from grateful alumni. Meds 77 had their 35th reunion, giving me a chance to welcome many old friends to Queen’s.

The advancement team, led by Vice Principal Tom Harris and Chief Development Officer Tom Hewitt, did an amazing job; as did our advancement FHS team of Shannon Coull, David Young and Jan Devonshire.

Our campaign will be focused on continuing our pursuit of excellence and will rally around four key themes:

  • be the destination for exceptional people;
  • enhance our students’ learning experiences;
  • secure our global reputation in discovery and inquiry; and
  • nurture a supportive community.

Quoting Principal Woolf, “This is a decisive moment in Queen’s history. The Initiative Campaign, through the power of philanthropy, is about investing in the people of Queen’s who – like the generations before them – will not waver in their pursuit of excellence.”

If you have any thoughts about the campaign, please respond to the blog…or better yet, please drop by the Macklem House, my door is always open.

    Your campaign and people involved is tremendously uplifting thank you. Of particular interest to me is the area of breaking stigma in mental health and Dr. Stuarts work.

    I am a peer leader of a Recovery International meeting who has recovered from mental illness using this program primarily. Our Canadian Non Profit Organization http://www.recoverycanada.org/ is 100% volunteer managed by those using our program- so peers helping peers. Our Recovery International Organization http://www.lowselfhelpsystems.org/ is celebrating it’s 75th anniversary this year.

    I would like you to know about our program because it’s CBT program is effective and cost effective. It helped me to break the stigma within myself. Now I am no longer afraid to talk to others about mental illness to do my part to break the large amount of myths that remain about mental illness.

      Dear Diane,

      For some reason my comment didn’t come through. Thanks for sharing your experience and I’m sure all of our readers are pleased that the organizations you refer to have been of benefit to you and others.
